Thanks Trevor.
What happened to Ruzicka? Is he hurt?
That sweep against the Oilers proves that the best way to beat them is solid defence. Flames got into firewagon hockey and don’t get the best results trading chances. Also the fact that the Avs have Makar and Toews instead of Hanifin and Anderson makes a huge difference. With the sweep it gives Colorado a chance to heal some wounds.

I always find it comical looking through the voting list and who they voted for with these awards. They really really need to stop this bs PHWA voting. It’s clear most of them have absolutely no idea what they’re talking about.

Treliving better be pushing hard to resign Johnny and not be waiting til July. If everything said by both parties is true then a deal shouldn’t take long. If there’s no deal by the end of June, I’d be looking to move his rights to the desired team he wants to sign with.
Johnny’s signing right to NJ, for the 2nd overall pick. Then take Nemec or Jiricek, Flames badly need a stud defenceman. I see JH going to NJ before Phil as they have a much better upside. Johnny to the Rangers for Schneider and a 2nd round pick.

If we don't have a deal with Gaudreau at the end of June, no team needs to give assets for him, they'll just wait for him to become UFA and we'll lose him for nothing.

Trading him to another team would allow that team to sign him to an 8 year contract. That's worth something....maybe a 2nd or 3rd round pick....more if the Flames take back salary.

Is this a joke or are you actually that stupid? Best case scenario is they get back a 3rd round pick, and you think they'll give up the second overall pick? The pick is more valuable than Gaudreau in a cap system, especially since he's a UFA. They also wouldn’t be able to sign Gaudreau for 8 years since they didn’t have his rights at the trade deadline.

NJ could be a good fit for Gaudreau but a realistic trade would be something like Gaudreau and something else for Zacha.

That’s false. The only way someone else gets Gaudreau for 8 years is a sign and trade, but I’m pretty sure that’s never happened in the NHL.

The Flames also can’t sign him to an 8 year extension after he officially becomes a free agent on July 13th.

Flames must have ink to contract before July 13th in order to get the 8th year.

I got to think they want that last year to try and reduce the overall a bit. maybe 8x9 instead of 7x9.5 or 8x8.5 instead of 7x9 in an effort to keep a few dollars available on the end of the deal when he may not be as valuable. Not saying he won't be a top 10 or so player at that time, but seeing as how he is already borderline now, by then he might be a 20-25 type and falling due to age. They need to find a happy-medium. Gonna be an interesting couple months in cowtown.

Please sign Tkachuk to anything over 9M and see the flames fans compare his contract to Draisaitl's. Would be incredible to see those comparisons on the HB boards.

What? The sign and trade? I guess Hossa was kind of a sign and trade, but that was before the current UFA rules so isn't the same thing. The other two points are in the CBA so definitely not incorrect there.

This has come up a lot recently with people speculating Tavares, Panarin, Hamilton, Hyman, et cetera will be involved in a sign and trade, but it never actually happens.

I guess the question is, what is the plan if they cannot sign JG?

Hopefully, the Swedish connection is strong enough that Forsberg wants to play in Calgary. And honestly, if you ignore the legacy factor, the Flames are probably a better team with Forsberg instead of Gaudreau.

But I think there's probably an 85% chance Gaudreau signs in Calgary and about a 2% chance Forsberg does.

Evolving Hockey projects a Gaudreau contract to come in at $11.27 million, and Tkachuk is slated to earn $10.87 million based on the same formula. Mangiapane is expected to fetch around $5.835 million, too. Assuming those deals are in the ballpark, that’ll leave Calgary a million in the hole with four forwards and three defencemen to ink round out the roster.

There's no way Gaudreau gets close to that. No one's paying him as a top 2 winger based off of one season, especially with the massive liability he brings. Maybe someone, hopefully not Calgary, is willing to go to 10, but I doubt anyone goes higher than that.

I am weary of paying anyone a huge contract. Unless it’s a superstud 1C or 1D.

The McDavids, Ovi’s, and Hedman’s of the world deserve it. But do the lower tear players? I would absolutely hesitate to sign both Tkachuk and JG to anything over 8.5.

Both are great players, but paying the two of them close to a quarter of the teams salary cap seems like a sure fire way to be mediocre for the next 8 years.

Contracts go up though. We’re getting to the point where elite players are going to be paid 9-10+ million. The next mega star to sign a contract will be over 13.

Tkachuk at 10 million will probably only seem high for the next 2-3 years.

lol remember when Flames fans were whining and laughing at the Draisaitl contract now one of the best values in the league. Not saying Nurse will win the Norris but does have the potential to be a 50-60 point man with the right systems. Time will tell...
